Course Overview
Can students implement a real world solution to a landscape design problem? How do the spaces around us come into being, and how do they affect us and the environment?
The DESIGNING COOL program will call on participants to become entrepreneurial, creative problem-solvers through a design and make approach.
In this course, participants will learn about and apply different areas of technology, namely the architectural/engineering design process, resistant materials, textiles, mechanisms and science of sustainability, to create an innovative design solutions that will address the existing-problem needs, and optimize functionality and aesthetics of our living surroundings. During the design process, participants will learn the necessary procedures to work safely and effectively. After producing their final product, participants will engage in an analysis and evaluation of their work and work of others, taking in consideration the social, moral, economic and environmental impact of their toy.
This course will foster independent learning and critical thinking in participants, which are the skills needed for today’s fast changing modern society.

Areas of Study: Landscape Design, Elementary Engineering, Art, Science of Sustainability, Graphic Design, Multimedia, Real World Connection
Throughout this Learning Experience each student will:

✓ Learn how to use effective Design thinking to create toy mock ups for testing and analysis.
✓ Learn how to use mathematical concepts and elements of engineering in a fun and creative way.
✓ Use design insight to create User friendly and easy to use toy functionalities.
✓ Engage with different technologies

All activities are inclusive of Shared-Classroom resources. These resources include shareable pencils, reusable tools and equipment, and general materials. Personal-use consumable resources are not included and must be purchased by the student. Personal use consumables include: personal toolkits, specific materials, clay, painting paper etc… which are consumed and/or taken home by the student after individual use.
