Course Description

Course Overview

During this 4 part program you will learn how to create video games, starting from the fundamentals of game design and development all the way to developing games for Mobile (Android) and Virtual Reality!

By following this Award program you will gain a comprehensive understanding of the different elements underlying great video games as well as the technical and creative skills necessary to both design and develop a complete 3D video game from concept to testing and bug fixing and ultimately launching stage. During this course you will be using professional game engine Unity 3D.

Who is this course best suited for?

This course is very well designed for complete beginners and budding video game creators with little to no prior knowledge. It is also great for those involved in the design or creative industries with a basic knowledge of design programs from developers to industrial designers and product designers who wish to take on a new learning challenge and branch out into the field of Game Design and Development.

This learning experience is based on various creative tasks and hands-on modules which aim to provide the student with an steep yet progressive learning curve starting from complete beginner to advanced levels.

Through a design and make learning methodology, by following this course students will also obtain a taste of what it takes to work in the creative industry. The program-tool-box introduced during this course include: Unity 3D, Microsoft Visual Studio (C#)

What will you Learn after this course?

This course is a combination of learning through lectures as well as hands-on and practical experience through a series of workshops and design tasks.

  • Discover different digital design platforms and how to use them in a multidisciplinary approach;
  • Adopt a designer mindset: learn to test assumptions, testing techniques on finding bugs, gain feedback and criticism and improve your overall design.
  • Obtain knowledge and skills creating an interactive game environment using GameObjects and C# scripting techniques.
  • Become confident using Unity3D Game Engine, Asset Store and Game objects
  • By end of this course you will successfully Design and Develop 3 video games!

Required: Each student is required to be in possession of his own laptop & decent workstation which will run the game engines

Preparatory course (Optional): Award in Game Design & Development (lvl 1)- Elementary Digital Games *NO CODING

Overview: This course allows students who wish to learn more about the world of Game Design. With the use of friendly user-interface programs Game Maker or Construct students will deepen their understanding about coding concepts without the need for actual coding (we’ll get into that during the later modules!)

Who is this prep recommended for? Students with complete beginner/zero prior coding or programming knowledge or skills. The only requirement is Good English communication.

Preparatory Module 1: Award in Game Design & Development (lvl 1)- Elementary Digital Games (Exit Award) | MQF Level 4 | 6 ECTS

Lectures: 30hrs — Total hours of expected learning including lectures, self study, assessments and project work (150 hrs)

Part 1: Award in Digital Games for the Future (lvl 2): Introductory Game Design & Development using Unity 3D

During this 1st Introductory course of this 3 part series you will become introduced to Unity – professional game engine. This program in Game Science, Design and Development will have you learn how to design and make digital games from concept to coding logic and concepts such as conditions and loops, programming skills (using C#); Game Design UI/UX, how to research game concepts, create stories, digital characters and animations.
Topics include:
  • Introduction with Game Development and Storyboard Design using Unity
  • Introduction to Unity3D Game Engine, Asset Store and Game Objects
  • Creating an interactive game environment using GameObjects
  • Creating additional scenes and user interfaces
  • Implementing Game Logic
  • Implementing Game Audio
  • Animations and Particle System
  • Testing games and bug fixing
  • Acknowledging feedback, and discussing techniques that enhance game performance

  • Introduction to coding for Unity Mobile using Unity’s Android mobile libraries
  • Understanding user experience and creating user interfaces for Android

  • Acknowledging feedback, and discussing techniques that enhance game performance

Module 3: Digital Games for the Future (lvl 3): Unity for Android (Exit Award) | MQF Level 5 | 6 ECTS

Part 3: Award in Digital Games for the Future (lvl 4): VR games using Unity

Overview:

During this 3rd Module of this Award program you will learn how to create and develop a game in Virtual Reality. Throughout this course we will develop three mobile games; two of which will be developed together in class and one which will be a personal development project. The games will be based on Virtual Reality using Google SDK. A VR headset which either consists of a Google Cardboard or a VR Headset used for smartphones will be required during this course.

During this course we will create some very exciting VR games projects… so get ready!

Topics include:
  •  Introduction with Game Development for VR using Unity (Android)
  • Setting up and Integrating SDKs for VR and Android in Unity
  • Learning on obtaining available libraries for coding
  • Analysing and understanding user experience and creating user interfaces for VR
  • Implementing Game Logic as per VR documentation
  • Implementing Game Audio
  • Animations and Particle System
  • Testing and bug fixing
  • Acknowledging feedback, and discussing techniques that enhance game performance
  • Presentation of game projects and understand ways to market and earn revenue for a VR Android Game

 

Module 4: Award in Digital Games for the Future (level 4): VR games using Unity (Exit Award) | MQF Level 5 | 6 ECTS

Students following the ‘Award in Interior Design’ study programme can apply for the Get Qualified Scheme which will enable them to benefit from a tax credit of 70% of the costs incurred (ie. Upto €962.50 will be refunded back for this full award course).

Frequently asked questions

Is financial aid available?

Yes. In select learning programs, you can apply for financial aid under the Get Qualified scheme. Students who attend any of the eligible study programmes can apply for the Get Qualified Scheme upon successful completion which will enable them to benefit from a tax credit of 70% of the costs incurred.

The Get Qualified scheme is only eligible for Accreditation courses. Certificate level courses are ineligible for funding.
