Course Overview
This instructive programme introduces not only the techniques of realist drawing and oil painting but also the underlying principles of figure drawing.
Divided into 2 course cycles 1st the Intensive Drawing course followed by the Classical Painting course you will delve right into the Classical Masters’ timeless approach towards life-like Realism where you will learn the principles, process and techniques needed for expertise in realistic expression in drawing and oil painting.
All lessons are structured and based on the Atelier methods- in the academic tradition of L’Académie des beaux-arts and modern schools of realism.
Who is this course best suited for?
The Classical Realism course is designed for motivated students with little to no prior knowledge, who seek to advance their skills in representational art with specific focus in oil painting and drawing.
It is for those who would like discover the science of representational art in light, optics, colour and geometry – inspired by Renaissance artists and obtain both theoretical knowledge and practical skill in the academic art of 20th century Classical Realism.
With the benefit of one-on-one artistic critique from a professional Realism artist, this program can be customized to meet different student levels. The lessons are easy to follow and progressive yet sophisticated enough for both beginner and more advanced students.
Part/ Cycle 1: Intensive Realist Drawing
Understanding accurate measurements and specificity through simplification. Students will be first taught how to approach drawing from life with the simplest of media: pencil. This is to ensure they can grasp concepts surrounding proportion, gesture, form, shadow shapes and line quality without the added hassle of technical issues pertaining to more difficult media. Through abstraction and simplification students will be taught how to translate three dimensional form onto a two dimensional surface.
Sessions include:
Charles Bargue workshop.
Introducing concepts of line quality, tones and the comparative method.
Figure Drawing from Life.
A full figure drawing from a live model.
Portrait Drawing from Cast
Introducing the sight-size method through executing a drawing in coal of a classical cast.
Part/ Cycle 2: Classical Oil Painting Programme
Using first a very limited grisaille palette, students will be introduced to the sophisticated medium of Oils. Values, Temperature control, atmosphere and hierarchies in light effect will be introduced as additions to lessons in the foundations of drawing.
Colour is introduced in an easy and controlled manner. This palette constituted of Titanium white, ivory black, English red, yellow ochre
and raw umber is key to understanding how to emulate still life colours and skin tones. From this the student can easily begin to experiment further and create a personal palette to use with a learned eye for temperatures and values with colour.
Sessions include:
Grisaille Painting from life.
A full figure Painting from a live model in Grisaille on Oil ground linen canvas.
Limited palette still life.
A complex still life composition, using a limited palette on Oil ground linen canvas.
Full palette painting from life.
A full figure Painting from a live model in a palette of personal choice on Oil ground linen canvas.

Meet the Tutor
Kelsey | B.A. (Hons) Fine Arts
Kelsey, is a professional fine artist from Senglea. She has been studying art form a very young age under many master artists.
Throughout her academic studies she has devoted most of her time delving in the studies of Classical and Surrealism Art at the Malta Institute of Fine Arts.
Despite her young age, Kelsey has been involved in many artistic projects both commercially and for private clients. She has been most recently renowned for her quick narration sketches on Kelma Kuljum on TVM and for the design of the Enemalta anniversary monument in Marsa.
Students will be provided with a Theory Booklet. Easels are also provided.

Certificate VS Accreditation: What's the difference?
With our Certificate VS Accreditation learning option you are flexible to choose your own learning path.
Certificate option (Informal Learning): You may opt for the Certificate path if you wish to attend the course for your own leisure or for personal development. A Certificate of skills acquired is awarded upon successful completion based on favourable attendance and project completion.
Accreditation option (Formal Learning): You may choose the accreditation option for professional recognition to your learning. An Official qualification certificate will be awarded to upon successful completion of all course assessment and project criteria. This industry recognised qualification continues to confirm the relevance of our industry-designed study programmes.
Is financial aid available?
Yes. In select learning programs, you can apply for financial aid under the Get Qualified scheme. Students who attend any of the eligible study programmes can apply for the Get Qualified Scheme upon successful completion which will enable them to benefit from a tax credit of 70% of the costs incurred.
The Get Qualified scheme is only eligible for Accreditation courses. Certificate level courses are ineligible for funding.
