Course Description
Course Overview
Can students design and create an innovative product to help with the needs of the elderly?
This course will call on participants to become creative, critical problem-solvers through a design and make approach. In this course, participants will learn about and apply different areas of technology, namely the engineering design process, electronics and programming to create an innovative product that will address the needs, wants and values of the intended user.
First, they research the well-being needs of the elderly individual and brainstorm innovative ways electronic gadgets can meet those emotional, physical or cognitive needs. To refine the design, the students present mock-ups to the elderly person, family and/or carers to collect feedback. As they build the gadget, students learn to use different tools and technologies.
During the course students will learn how to program directly onto a circuit which will make use of a programmable microcontroller (PICAXE-08) which will determine how the circuit operates.
During the manufacturing process, participants will learn the necessary procedures to work safely and effectively. After producing their final product, participants will engage in an analysis and evaluation of their work and work of others, taking in consideration the social, moral, economic and environmental impact of their product. This course will foster independent learning and critical thinking in participants, which are the skills needed for today’s fast changing modern society.
