Course Overview
This course is an intensive exploration of the world of hand lettering and calligraphy. During this learning experience we we will explore various styles and typefaces, allowing you to experiment with a vast array of creative possibilities: from traditional techniques and lettering styles, to new ideas and creative possibilities.
By the end of this course you will learn the strokes, techniques and movements necessary to reach a level of confidence and proficiency with the tools. This includes practicing all typeface styles on paper during each lesson and building your personal style and portfolio along the way.
Who is this course aimed for?
This course is open to all levels. Whether you are an artist or designer seeking to branch into the world of Calligraphy and lettering or a complete beginner with little to no prior knowledge this course is easy to follow yet sophisticated enough to keep you progressing and advancing your knowledge and skills.
Course Content
The course will be split into the following modules below:
• Part 1: Getting Started! Introduction: Evolution of Calligraphy, Tools & Hand-eye coordination
• Part 2: Roman Empire Font
• Part 3: Serif Fonts
• Part 4: Sans Serif – Learning about weight, spacing, angles and embellishments)
• Part 6: Exploring Medieval Text (the tradition, about angles & rhythm)
• Part 7: The Beauty of Copperplate Typeface
• Part 8: Create your own Poster/ Finishing project
What will you Learn after this course?
This course will give you the hands on practical experience you need to hone your craft through a series of workshops and lettering tasks.
Throughout this course you will learn:
Acquire knowledge of the tools and basic elements but also to develop a personal artistic style through experimentation and practice;
Create personal finished products (medieval text samples, decorative texts for design objects, posters etc.)
We will also discuss theory, ideology, technique and process through lectures exposing yourself to a broad spectrum of subjects to help find your style/area of specialization as a hand letterer. All your work will be guided and critiqued by a professional lettering designer.
Rebecca Ranieri, is a professional artist and an Italian paper and book conservator by profession.
Native of Parma- Italy, Rebecca showed interest for art from a very young age. After dabbling in art school, she later pursued her professional studies in paper and photography Conservation where she graduated from the Academy of Fine Art in Bologna. Rebecca specialized in subjects such as etching, librarianship, bookbinding, paleography and calligraphy.
Since falling in love with – and in! Malta in 2017, she continued working as a paper conservator while fulfilling her passion for art and teaching.
Amidst the recent challenging period of the pandemic Rebecca rediscovered the claim for making art during lockdowns. The obligation to spend more time indoor allowed her to get back to her canvas in full swing! She chose to add colour and share her sparkly talents with others. She has since launched several art exhibitions across different art spaces in Malta and Gozo.
Besides her love for art and anything creative she most passionate about sharing her knowledge with others, but most in particular those with the will to get their hands dirty and their creative brains sparking!
