Human Anatomy Drawing in Big Scale

From Da Vinci’s sublime studies to Michelangelo’s muscular creations, the study of anatomy has inspired extraordinary achievements in the history of art. Their work was shaped by a profound knowledge of the human machine and this zest for learning led directly to works of absolute aesthetic beauty and mastery.

Course Content

This workshop explores the style and substance of figure drawing viewed through the prism of human anatomy designed upon the idea that precise anatomical observation and perfect drawing of the human body is possible only through the big scale drawing. Participants will be introduced to the big scale drawing technique using charcoal and very soft pencils together with smudge techniques to produce an observation drawing of the human body. Principles of the methods for the creation of big scale drawing will be introduced together with understanding how such techniques will help to observe and understand anatomy in a better way.

This course will also allow students to draw detailed drawings of the different parts of the human body and muscle groups which can then culminate into an anatomy life drawing experience.

Together with a live model, participants will practice new ideas of big scale drawing (1:1) where they will use all arm to generate cohesive outcome.

Apply scale drawing techniques to your own compositions.
Gain one-on-one critique and demonstrations from professional artist Stefan Priehyba in drawing techniques using charcoal, soft pencils and smudge techniques

Big Scale easels will be provided.

Part 1: Detailed analysis of human anatomy

During a live demonstration by Stefan, students will acquire detailed anatomical studies of the bio mechanics behind the different muscle groups relating to the arm and leg and how they are connected to each other and to the skeleton.

Part 2: Detailed analysis of human anatomy

During a live demonstration by Stefan, students will acquire detailed anatomical studies of the bio mechanics behind the different muscle groups relating to the torso, back and neck and how they are connected to each other and to the skeleton.

Part 3: Analytical Form and Geometry in Figure Drawing

After and extensive and in depth study of the different muscle groups students will be introduce the principles of geometry to capture the composition of the observed model
Students will also be demonstrated and assisted in drawing techniques using charcoal, soft pencils and smudge techniques

Parts 4 & 5: Practice of objective Geometrical Observations and Big Scale techniques

During the next consequent sessions students will repeat and practice break down geometry techniques to capture a full objective and cohesive composition
Students will also become introduced and assisted in developing techniques for big scale drawing
